The character arc of Letsile Tebogo
Born 7 June 2003 in Kanye, a town in southern Botswana. Between then and now sit two world under 20 sprint titles and a world junior record, world medals over 100m and 200m in Budapest, the loss of his mother in May 2024, and, that August in Paris, the 200m run in an African record that gave Botswana its first Olympic gold of any kind. He carried her name on his spikes. The line below draws the story so far, in order.

Who is Letsile Tebogo?
The boy from Kanye who ran for his mother.
He was born in Kanye in 2003 and raised by his mother, Seratiwa, who worked to give him his chance and who he has always called the reason he runs. He came up fast: at the world under 20 championships he won the 100m in Nairobi in 2021, then defended the title in Cali in 2022 with a world junior record of 9.91, a teenager from Botswana suddenly among the fastest young men the sport had seen. By 2023 he was a senior force, taking silver over 100m and bronze over 200m at the world championships in Budapest.
The line does not run straight up. In May 2024, months before the Olympic year he had built toward, his mother died. He has spoken of it plainly as the hardest thing he has carried, and of choosing to run through it rather than step away. When he lined up for the 200m final in Paris that August, her name and her dates were painted on his spikes, so that, in his words, he was carrying her through every stride.
He won. In 19.46 seconds, an African record, he beat the favourites to become the 200m Olympic champion and the first person from Botswana ever to win an Olympic gold, and days later anchored his country to relay silver and an African record of its own. He was named World Athlete of the Year for 2024. His line is worth reading because the highest point on it and the lowest sit months apart, and he ran the one in honour of the other.

It is basically me carrying her through every stride that I take inside the field.
