Her father, Rasendra Mazumdar, was head brewmaster at United Breweries, so brewing was the family trade. She took a zoology degree at Bangalore University in 1973 and then went to Ballarat College at Melbourne University to study brewing, where in 1974 she was the only woman enrolled on the course. She qualified as a master brewer in 1975.

Then she looked for work in India and was told she could not be hired as a master brewer there because, in the words recorded, it is a man's work. She had the training, the family name in the trade, and the qualification, and the door was shut on the one fact about her that had nothing to do with any of it.

In 1978 she started Biocon India in a garage with ten thousand rupees of seed capital. She faced credibility problems over her age, her gender and an untested business model, and could not get bank funding until she happened to meet a banker at a social event. Biocon started in enzymes and moved into biopharmaceuticals; revenue went from seventy crore rupees in 1998 to five hundred crore by 2004, and the public offering that year was oversubscribed thirty three times, closing at over a billion dollars of market value.
