Who is Katie Piper?

She grew up in Andover in Hampshire, the middle of three children. She trained as a beautician, because she liked fashion and beauty, and then went into modelling. That is the ordinary, unremarkable first chapter, and it matters because of what the second one did to it.
In March 2008 she was attacked by two men. The attack caused major damage to her face and blindness in one eye. Both men were convicted and both were given life sentences. She underwent pioneering surgery to restore her face and her vision, which is a phrase that covers years of operations.
In 2009 she did something the law specifically protected her from having to do. A victim of that crime has a right to lifelong anonymity, and she gave hers up, deliberately, in order to raise awareness for people with burns. Her experience was documented in a Channel 4 film that year, which was subsequently sold internationally.
