Who is Joshua Cheptegei?
The highland boy who answered a public fall.
He was born in 1996 in Kapchorwa, a town high in the mountains of eastern Uganda where thin air and long climbs have raised more than one great runner. He came through as a junior with real promise, taking the world junior 10000m title in 2014, and by his early twenties he was among the names spoken of for the very top of distance running. The mountains gave him the engine; what he did with it is the rest of the story.
The line does not run straight up. In March 2017 his country hosted the World Cross Country Championships in Kampala, and he ran at the front of the race with the crowd behind him, only to fade badly over the closing kilometres and stagger home well down the field. It was a hard, public afternoon, watched by a home nation that had come to see him win. What he did with it is the point of his arc: rather than let it be the ending, he made it the start of an answer, and went away to build a runner who would not break like that again.
The answer came fast and it kept coming. He won the world 10000m title in Doha in 2019, then in one extraordinary year set world records over both 5000m and 10000m in 2020. He won Olympic 5000m gold in Tokyo in 2021, and Olympic 10000m gold in Paris in 2024, joining the small number of runners who have stood at the very top of the sport across a whole Olympic cycle. His line is worth reading because the afternoon that was meant to define him is only one dot on it, and the line rose for years afterward.

A 5000m world record
Milestone. In Monaco he broke the world 5000m record that had stood for sixteen years.
A 10000m world record

Olympic silver over 10000m
Milestone. At the Tokyo Games he took silver over 10000m, and turned straight to the shorter race to come.
Olympic 5000m gold, Tokyo
Milestone, and it changed everything. Days later he won Olympic 5000m gold, his first Olympic title and the highest step so far.
Olympic 10000m gold, Paris

A half marathon win

The line reaches today still running, which is why it is drawn now rather than at the end. He is racing on into new distances and new seasons, and the boy from the Kapchorwa highlands is greeted at home as one of the finest athletes his country has ever sent to the world.
