Who is Joey Alexander?
A boy in Bali taught himself, and the world leaned in.
He was born in Bali in 2003, and there was no jazz school there to send him to. What there was, was his father Denny's record collection. At about six he began working out Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane by ear on a small electric keyboard, alone, with the records as the only teacher in the room. He was not handed the music. He reached for it.
When a video of him playing spread in 2013, the reaching was answered. He won the grand prize at a jazz competition in Odessa against adults from seventeen nations, and Wynton Marsalis, who had seen a clip, called and gave him his United States debut at Jazz at Lincoln Center at ten. His family then made the hard choice behind all of it: they left Indonesia for New York, a city where a ten year old had no standing, and bet a childhood on the music. Within two years he had a debut album and two Grammy nominations, the youngest jazz artist ever named in a competitive category, at twelve.
The line does not stop at the prodigy story, which is the part worth reading. He kept writing, put out a record of his own compositions, met the doubt and the blank page that every maker meets, and moved back to Bali to answer them, naming his 2026 album for the quiet force he leaned on to keep going. Stay home, or leap

Milestone. Made after a move back to Bali and a spell of doubt and creative block, named for the quiet force he leaned on to keep writing.
The line reaches today still adding to itself, which is why it is drawn now rather than at the end. What it set moving is already out in the world: every kid who taught themselves from records their parents kept, and every family who decided the gift in the house was worth the leap.
