Who is Jensen Huang?
From the dishpit to the age of AI.
His parents sent him from Taiwan to America as a boy, and through a mix-up he landed at a rural boarding school in Kentucky that turned out to be closer to a reform school. He was one of the smallest, was bullied, and was assigned to clean the dormitory bathrooms. He has said he loved it there anyway, and that he cleaned a lot of toilets before he was a CEO. Later, working his way through school, he bussed tables and washed dishes at Denny's.
In 1993, on his thirtieth birthday, he and two co-founders sat in a Denny's booth and started Nvidia. The company nearly died more than once: an early chip failed, and at one point it was down to about thirty days of cash and had to lay off most of its staff and bet everything on a single next product. He kept a mantra: the company is always thirty days from going out of business.
The graphics chips he built for gamers turned out, years later, to be exactly the engines that artificial intelligence needed, and Nvidia became one of the most valuable companies on earth. He tells students he wishes them not comfort but pain and suffering, because he believes greatness comes from character, and character is formed in people who have suffered. His line is worth reading for the shape of it: the toilets and the dishpit are not a footnote to the success, they are, in his telling, the foundation of it.
