Who is Ilona Maher?

She grew up in Burlington, Vermont, one of four sisters, and did not find rugby until she was seventeen, in the spring of her senior year of high school. She went on to study nursing at Quinnipiac University and earned her degree in 2018, keeping a foot in a caring profession while she climbed toward the national side. The late start became part of her story: proof that a line can turn sharply upward long after other people have decided where it is going.
Her first Olympics, in Tokyo, ended sixth on the field but changed everything off it. From inside the athletes' village she filmed short, funny, unguarded videos about training, her body and the pressure to look a certain way, and they reached far past rugby. She answered body-shaming comments with humour and facts rather than hurt, and a generation of people who had been told they were too big found a champion who was proud to be strong, powerful and seen.
