Who is Hwang Dong-hyuk?

He was born in Seoul in 1971, studied at Seoul National University, and then crossed the Pacific to train in film at the University of Southern California. He came home to make his own pictures. His 2007 debut My Father was drawn from a true story, and in 2011 his film Silenced, about abuse at a school for deaf children, moved the public so deeply that the country revised its laws in response. In 2014 the comedy Miss Granny filled theatres, and in 2017 he made the historical drama The Fortress. He was, by any measure, a working director with a real body of work.
The film that would carry his name furthest, though, sat in a drawer. He wrote the script for Squid Game around 2009, a fable about people in debt playing children's games for their lives, and for roughly ten years he was turned away. Investors and actors found it too strange, too dark, not the sort of thing anyone would watch. The line here does not run straight up. He kept making other films and kept the script alive, and in the years he waited the world changed until the story he had written no longer looked strange but familiar.
Netflix said yes at last, and in September 2021 Squid Game reached almost every country at once and became the most watched series in the platform's history. In 2022 he won the Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series, the first South Korean ever to do so, and he went on to write and direct two more seasons, closing the story in 2025.
