Who is Hans Zimmer?

He was born in Frankfurt in 1957 and grew up mostly at the piano at home, teaching himself by ear. His only formal training was two weeks of lessons as a boy, which he has described as torture, after which he learned the way he always would: by listening. As a young man in London he played keyboards in bands, appeared with The Buggles on Video Killed the Radio Star, and paid his way writing music for advertisements, gathering the studio craft that later set him apart.
The turn came through the composer Stanley Myers, who took him on and shared a studio with him, and through whom he found his way into film. Rain Man in 1988 was the breakthrough, a first Hollywood score and a first Academy Award nomination, and six years later The Lion King won him the Oscar for Best Original Score. He had reached the top of a craft he had never been formally taught.
What followed was a body of work that shaped how a generation of films sound: Gladiator, the Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, Interstellar, and Dune, which brought him a second Academy Award in 2022.
