Who is Gurmit Singh?

He was playing six people.

He was born in Singapore in 1965 to a Sikh Indian father, Chainchal Singh Virk, and a mother of mixed Chinese and Japanese descent. He was brought up as a Sikh and converted to Christianity in 1985. He made his television debut on the variety show Live On 5 in 1994, and became the host and lead actor of the sketch comedy series Gurmit's World in the same year.

In the second season, in 1995, he played his own relatives in a series of sketches, six characters in all. One of them was a general contractor called Phua Chu Kang. In 1997 that one character was given a Singlish-language sitcom of his own, Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd, and it made him a household name not only in Singapore but in Malaysia, the Riau Islands of Indonesia and the Philippines.

He won the Asian Television Awards prize for best performance by an actor in comedy five times, from 1998 to 2001 and again in 2003, with Highly Commended prizes from 2004 to 2005. A Malaysian spin-off, Phua Chu Kang Sdn Bhd, ran from 2009 to 2010, and he was nominated for best actor at the first Golden Wau Awards in 2013 for Phua Chu Kang The Movie. In October 2014 Madame Tussauds Singapore unveiled a wax figure of the character, and in November 2014 he announced he would leave the entertainment industry at the end of his full time television career, after exactly twenty years. He became the Dover Park Hospice ambassador in July 2017, and the character was signed as a brand ambassador in August 2020.
