She grew up in Sacramento and went east to Barnard College, wanting to be a playwright. When she finished, she applied to graduate playwriting programmes and every one of them turned her down. The stage door she had aimed at stayed shut, and so she went in through a side one: she began acting in the small, low-budget independent films of the late 2000s, often improvising her own lines, and learned how a scene is built from the inside of the frame.
The writing she had wanted to do found its way back. She co-wrote and starred in Frances Ha with Noah Baumbach in 2012, and the partnership gave her a second training, this time in shaping a whole film on the page. Then in 2017 she did the thing the rejections had once seemed to close off: she directed a film entirely her own. Lady Bird, a love letter to the Sacramento she came from, earned five Academy Award nominations, and made her only the fifth woman ever nominated for Best Director.
