The character arc of Giannis Antetokounmpo

Born 06 December 1994 in Athens to Nigerian parents, and stateless for his first eighteen years. Between then and now sit a childhood spent selling watches, sunglasses and bags on the street to help his family eat, a late start in the game, a season as a raw second division prospect, Greek citizenship weeks before the draft, two Most Valuable Player awards, and a championship won with fifty points in the final. The line below draws the story so far, in order.

Who is Giannis Antetokounmpo?

He sold sunglasses to eat, and won the whole thing.

He was born in Athens in 1994 to parents who had come from Nigeria without work permits, and for his first eighteen years he had official papers from no country at all. Money was short, and as boys he and his older brother Thanasis helped the family eat by hawking watches, sunglasses and handbags to tourists on the street. He came to basketball late, around thirteen, on borrowed shoes shared between brothers, and for a long time almost nobody outside Greece knew his name.

By 2012 he was a raw, thin teenager in the Greek second division, more promise than product. Greece granted him citizenship on 09 May 2013, weeks before the NBA draft, and that June the Milwaukee Bucks used the fifteenth pick on a player most of the league had barely seen. What followed was not sudden. He added weight, reach and skill year after year until he was named the league Most Valuable Player in 2019, then again in 2020 alongside the award for the best defender in the game.

The line does not run only up. A hyperextended knee in the 2021 playoffs looked as if it might end his season before the Finals began. He returned, and on 20 July 2021 he scored fifty points in the closing game to win Milwaukee its first title in fifty years, and was named Finals MVP. The mindset he preaches, in his own words, is to stay in the present: the past is ego, the future is pride, the moment is humility. His line is worth reading because the boy on the pavement and the champion are the same person, drawn without a break.

In his words

Quotes by Giannis Antetokounmpo

When you focus on the past, that is your ego. When you focus on the future, that is your pride. I try to focus in the moment, in the present. That is humility.

Your turn

Every story draws a unique line.

His runs three decades from a stall on an Athens street to the top of the game, and it is still being drawn. Yours is already longer than you think, and drawing it takes about three minutes.
