The character arc of Gary Vaynerchuk

Born on 14 November 1975 in Babruysk, in what is now Belarus, and brought to the United States as a small child. Between then and now sit years working in the family liquor store, a wine business moved early onto the internet, a daily online show begun in 2006 that built an audience from almost nothing, the founding of VaynerMedia with his brother AJ in 2009, several books, a run of early startup bets, and the company he built around VeeFriends. The line below draws the story so far, in order.

Who is Gary Vaynerchuk?

The store clerk who bet on the internet.

He was born in Babruysk, in what is now Belarus, in 1975, and his family emigrated to the United States while he was a small child, settling in New Jersey. He grew up inside a family business, working in his parents' liquor store from a young age and learning the trade from the floor rather than from a classroom. It was an ordinary immigrant start, a family, a shop and long hours, of the kind most arcs have before the dot that changes everything.

The turn in his line was seeing early what the internet would do to selling. He rebranded the family store as Wine Library and moved it online well before most retailers had, and the business grew several times over under him. Then, in 2006, he did the thing that made his name: he pointed a camera at himself and made a wine show every day, plainly and without polish, and kept at it until a small audience became a large one. He had understood that attention was the thing worth building, long before it was obvious.

On that foundation he built the rest. In 2009 he and his younger brother AJ founded VaynerMedia, an agency made for the age of social media, and he wrote the first of several books arguing that anyone could build a business around what they cared about. He backed young companies early, some of which became household names, and later built VeeFriends into a company of its own. His line is worth reading because none of it was inherited whole. It was a shop, a camera and a long stretch of patience, drawn out one day at a time.
