The character arc of Falguni Nayar
Born 19 February 1963 in Mumbai. Between then and now sit an MBA at Ahmedabad, nearly twenty years in investment banking rising to managing director, a decision at about fifty to leave a secure career and start over, the founding of Nykaa in 2012, a patient climb to profit, a landmark public listing in November 2021, and a company she has kept building since. The line below draws the story so far, in order.
Tap the line to pluck it. Hover or tap any mark for its card. Drawn from the public record of her life; the sources are at the foot of the page.
Who is Falguni Nayar?
The banker who began again at fifty.
She was born in Mumbai in 1963, studied commerce at Sydenham College and took an MBA at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, one of the country's most selective schools. She built a career in finance over nearly two decades, joining Kotak Mahindra in 1993, leading mergers and acquisitions, opening institutional offices in London and New York, and rising to managing director of its investment banking arm. By her late forties she was one of India's most respected bankers, with everything a long career is supposed to be built toward.
The line does not simply keep climbing the same ladder. In 2012, at about fifty, she left that secure world to start something entirely her own, founding the beauty and lifestyle retailer Nykaa with her own money and learning online retail from scratch at an age when most careers are winding down. She built it slowly and deliberately, and by the time it was known across India it had done something rare for a young internet company at home: it was profitable.
In November 2021 Nykaa listed on the public markets, its shares climbed on the first day, and she became one of India's few self-made women billionaires, a founder in her late fifties. The share price later fell back from its opening highs, and she answered that the way she had answered everything, by building the business, carrying revenue past a billion dollars by 2026 and saying she wants to build a future L'Oreal or Estee Lauder out of India. Her line is worth reading because the largest chapter began at fifty, long after the story was supposed to be settled.
