The character arc of Edin Dzeko
Born 17 March 1986 in Sarajevo, a child through the siege of the 1990s. Between then and now sit a home lost and football played on regardless, a move to Wolfsburg and a Bundesliga title, a stoppage-time goal on the last day that helped win Manchester City its first league crown in a generation, his country led to its first World Cup, a Serie A scoring crown, and a captaincy carried into his forties. The line below draws the story so far, in order.

Who is Edin Dzeko?
The boy from Sarajevo, his country's captain.
He was born in Sarajevo in 1986 and was six years old when the siege of the city began. His family's home was among those lost, and much of his childhood was spent under it, yet he kept playing football wherever a pitch could be found. That his story starts there, and climbs the way it does, is the reason the line is worth reading: the dot at the beginning sits very low, and it does not stay there.
His football carried him out into Europe. He signed for Wolfsburg in 2007 and, alongside Grafite, formed one of the most feared strike pairings in Germany, winning the Bundesliga in 2009. Manchester City brought him in for a club-record fee, and on the last day of the 2011-12 season his equaliser deep in stoppage time set up the goal that won City its first league title in 44 years. He went on to Roma, where in 2017 he became the first Bosnian to win the Serie A scoring crown, and later to Inter, Fenerbahce, Fiorentina and Schalke, scoring in a professional match in every year for two decades.
For his country the story is larger still. He debuted for Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2007, became its all-time top scorer in 2012, and in 2013 helped it qualify for its first World Cup as an independent nation. He wore the captain's armband at two World Cups, the second at the age of forty, and stands as the most-capped and highest-scoring player his country has known. His line is worth reading because a boy who began where he did came to carry a whole nation's shirt, and carried it the longest.
