Who is Dua Lipa?

She was born in London in 1995 to parents who had come to the city from Pristina, and her first years were English ones. When she was eleven the family moved back to Kosovo, and she spent her early teens there, between two homes and two languages. She has spoken of loving music from the start, and of a clear picture, held young, of the life she wanted to build.
At fifteen she made a decision most people would not make at twice the age: she returned to London on her own to be where the music was. She taught herself by posting covers of the songs she loved online, released her first singles in 2015, and in June 2017 put out a self-titled debut album. Its single New Rules reached number one in Britain, and a career that had been built one upload at a time was suddenly a national one.
Her second album, the disco-bright Future Nostalgia, arrived in March 2020 into a world locking its doors, and became one of the records that carried people through it. She has won Best New Artist and, for Future Nostalgia, Best Pop Vocal Album at the Grammy Awards, released a third album, Radical Optimism, in 2024, and toured it around the world. Her line is worth reading because the turn that made everything possible was a fifteen year old choosing, alone, to go back to the beginning of her story and start it properly.
