Who is Diego Forlan?
The slow starter who won two Golden Boots.
He was born in Montevideo in 1979 into a family that had lived the game for three generations. His father, Pablo Forlan, played for Uruguay at two World Cups, and his grandfather was an international who later coached the national side, so the shirt and the weight of it were around him from the start. He came through in Argentina and made his professional debut for Independiente in 1998, a forward with a clean strike and a habit of arriving.
His line does not run straight up. When Manchester United signed him in January 2002 the goals would not come, and he went month after month without one, a young striker learning what it is to carry a price and a drought in a foreign league at once. The breakthrough came late in 2002, and the celebrated winner at Anfield followed. Rather than settle for that, he moved to Spain to play every week, and it is there the line climbs: at Villarreal he scored 25 and shared the European Golden Boot in 2005, and at Atletico Madrid he took a second Golden Boot in 2009 and lifted the Europa League the year after.
The summit came in his country's colours. At the 2010 World Cup he was the joint top scorer and was named the best player of the tournament, the Golden Ball, as Uruguay reached the last four and finished fourth. He played on into his forties and hung up his boots in 2019, and in 2026 he returned to lead the national team he had once carried, this time from the touchline. His line is worth reading because the season everyone remembered him struggling is only one dip on it, and it kept rising for a decade after.
