The character arc of Cristiano Ronaldo

Born 5 February 1985 in Funchal on the island of Madeira, in a home with little to spare. Between then and now sit a childhood on the island, leaving home at twelve for the Sporting Lisbon academy, a move to Manchester United at eighteen, the loss of his father in 2005, five Ballon d'Or awards, five Champions League titles, a European Championship won for Portugal, and the record for the most goals in the history of men's international football. The line below draws the story so far, in order.

Who is Cristiano Ronaldo?

The boy from Madeira who would not be outworked.

He was born in Funchal on the island of Madeira in 1985, the youngest of four in a home that had little, and he learned the game on the island's streets before anyone knew his name. At twelve he left his family and crossed the water alone to join the Sporting Lisbon academy, homesick and small for his age, and made himself into a first team player fast enough that Manchester United signed him at eighteen in 2003. The number he asked not to wear, the number seven, was given to him anyway, and he grew into it.

The line does not run straight up. In September 2005 his father died, and he has spoken of playing on through that loss and of the hole it left. What he did with the years that followed is the shape of his arc: a first Ballon d'Or and a first Champions League with United, a record move to Real Madrid, and a decade of goals at a pace the game had not seen, four more Ballon d'Or awards and four more European Cups across Spain and Italy. In 2016 he lifted the European Championship for Portugal, and in 2021 he passed every man who had come before him to become the record scorer in international football.

Away from the pitch he carries no tattoos so that he can give blood, has donated to children's hospitals and to those in need after disasters, and speaks often of the boy from the island who had almost nothing. His line is worth reading because none of it was handed to him: it was built on leaving home young, on turning up first and leaving last, and on treating natural gift as the start of the work rather than the end of it.
