He grew up in Annapolis, Maryland, and went to the Baltimore School for the Arts, where he chose fashion as his major. To learn the craft properly he went to London, took a degree there, and interned in the ateliers of Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen, two houses that taught him how a garment is really built. He came home wanting to make clothes under his own name.
In 2008 he won the fourth season of Project Runway as its youngest winner, and rather than let the title fade he opened his own label in New York that same year. The work climbed slowly and then quickly. By 2016 he had designed the dress a First Lady wore for a nationally televised speech, and in 2019 the tuxedo gown Billy Porter wore to the Academy Awards, a garment that was talked about long after the night ended.
What set him apart was who he dressed. When the comedian Leslie Jones said in 2016 that no designer would make her a red carpet gown, he simply made her one, and his shows became known for models of every size, age and background.
