He found the weight room in his teens, learned the sport under his future brother in law Iain Valliere, and turned out to be built for the newer Classic Physique category, which prized proportion over sheer size. In 2016 he earned his professional card, and by 2017 he was on the Olympia stage, where he finished runner-up two years running as he closed the gap on the man ahead of him.
The line does not run straight up. Weeks before the 2018 Olympia he was hospitalized with severe swelling and diagnosed with IgA nephropathy, an autoimmune kidney condition with no cure. He came second again that year, and then made the diagnosis a chapter rather than an ending: he changed how he trained, favouring lower volume and higher intensity, managed the condition with his medical team, and in 2019 won his first Classic Physique Olympia.
