The character arc of Charles Leclerc

Born 16 October 1997 in Monte Carlo, into a Monegasque family who loved racing. Between then and now sit a childhood karting on borrowed money, the loss of the mentor who taught him and then of the father who started him, back-to-back junior titles in GP3 and Formula 2, a Formula 1 debut, a seat at Ferrari, his first Grand Prix wins, and the home race he had dreamt of winning his whole life. The line below draws the story so far, in order.

Who is Charles Leclerc?

The Monaco kart that reached Ferrari and home.

He was born in Monte Carlo in 1997, the son of a former Formula 3 driver, and learned to race on the karting track at nearby Brignoles owned by the family of Jules Bianchi. Bianchi, a rising Ferrari-backed driver, became his mentor and godfather to the sport, and the young Leclerc rose fast through karting on a talent that outran the family budget. In 2015, Bianchi died of injuries from a crash the year before, a loss Leclerc has called the hardest of his life and one that shaped how he carries himself in the car.

The line does not run straight up. He won the GP3 Series in 2016 and moved to Formula 2 in 2017, and days before a race weekend in Baku his father Herve died after a long illness. Days later he took pole and won there, and dedicated it to the man who had put him in a kart. He finished that season as Formula 2 champion, reached Formula 1 with Sauber in 2018, and in 2019 signed for Ferrari, the team his mentor had once been bound for.

At Ferrari he took his first Grand Prix wins in 2019, at Spa and then before the home crowd at Monza, and for years chased the one race that mattered most to him. In May 2024 he won the Monaco Grand Prix, the street circuit outside the door he grew up behind, a win his father and his mentor had not lived to see. His line is worth reading because the two hardest losses on it sit low and early, and the line kept climbing until it reached the exact place he had always pointed at.
