Born on 30 March 1968 in Charlemagne, Quebec, the youngest of fourteen children of a homemaker and a butcher, in a poor but by her own account happy home. Who is Celine Dion?
Seventeen years of symptoms. Then somebody finally named it.
She was the fourteenth child. Her mother was a homemaker, her father a butcher, and the house in Charlemagne was poor and, in her own account, happy. Music was in all of it; she was named after a song. At twelve she sat down with her mother and one of her brothers and wrote her first song, and her brother sent the tape to a manager.
By fifteen she was the first Canadian artist to receive a gold record in France, and through the 1980s she made eight French language albums and became a star in Quebec before she was an adult. What followed in English is one of the largest careers in recorded music: albums certified diamond, a French language record that became the best selling of all time in that language, world tours, and a Las Vegas residency that routinely sold out for five years.
In August 2014 she stopped everything, postponing the residency and cancelling a tour, because her husband and manager was seriously ill. He died on 14 January 2016, of throat cancer, at seventy three. His funeral was held in the Montreal basilica where they had married twenty one years earlier, and their eldest son gave the eulogy.
Then her own body began to go. She cancelled North American tour dates in January 2022 because of severe muscle spasms, and on 8 December that year she announced she had been diagnosed with stiff-person syndrome, a rare neurological disease. She said it affected every aspect of her life and made it difficult to walk. In 2024 she said she had struggled with a variety of mysterious symptoms for seventeen years before anybody could tell her what it was.
She has not disappeared. She made her feature acting debut in 2023 and recorded five songs for it. In June 2024 a documentary about her life with the illness was released, which she took part in. And on 26 July 2024 she sang from the Eiffel Tower to close the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris, which is about as public a return as it is possible to make.
