The character arc of Saul "Canelo" Alvarez

Born 18 July 1990 in Guadalajara, the youngest of a large family from Jalisco. Between then and now sit a childhood selling ice cream, a professional debut at fifteen, a first world title at twenty, a formative loss to Floyd Mayweather, world titles won across four weight divisions, and the night in 2021 he became the first undisputed champion at super middleweight. The line below draws the story so far, in order.

Who is Saul "Canelo" Alvarez?

The boy who sold ice cream, the face of boxing.

He was born in Guadalajara in 1990, the youngest of a large Jalisco family, and as a boy he sold ice cream in the street to help at home. Several of his brothers boxed, and he followed them into the gym young, turning professional at fifteen. The red hair that ran in the family gave him the name that followed him everywhere, Canelo. By twenty he had won his first world title, taking the WBC light middleweight belt in 2011, and the boy from the ice cream cart was on his way to becoming the biggest name in the sport.

The line does not run straight up. In September 2013, still only twenty three, he took his first professional defeat against Floyd Mayweather, then the finest boxer of his generation, on one of the biggest nights the sport had seen. What he did with that night is the point of his arc: rather than let it define him, he made it a chapter and answered it by fighting the best there were, moving up through the weights and beating the champions in his path across four divisions.

On 6 November 2021 he beat Caleb Plant to hold every belt at super middleweight, the first fighter ever to be undisputed in that division. He has been boxing's biggest draw for more than a decade, a source of pride across Mexico, and he keeps fighting into a new era of the sport. His line is worth reading because the loss that was meant to check him is only one dot on it, and the line kept climbing for years after.
