Who is Brian Chesky?

He grew up in Niskayuna, New York, the son of two social workers, and went to the Rhode Island School of Design to study industrial design, where he learned to treat a product as an experience built for a real person. That training is the thread through everything after: he thinks like a designer first, and has said the discipline of art school is the reason a stranger's spare room could be made to feel safe and considered rather than merely cheap.
The company began as a way to make rent. In 2007 he and his co-founder put three air mattresses on their San Francisco floor and rented them to people in town for a design conference, and the idea grew from there. It nearly did not survive: to fund it they designed and sold boxes of novelty breakfast cereal, and only a place in the Y Combinator programme in 2009 kept it alive. From there Airbnb scaled into a global marketplace where hosts open their homes and guests find somewhere to stay.
His line does not run straight up. In the spring of 2020 travel collapsed almost overnight, the company lost most of its business in weeks, and he cut roughly a quarter of the staff, writing a letter about the layoffs that was widely praised for its candour and care. Rather than let that be the ending, he steadied the company around its original idea, and in December 2020 took it public in one of the year's landmark listings. His arc is worth reading because the year that could have finished it became the chapter before its largest one.
