The character arc of Brené Brown
Born 18 November 1965 in San Antonio, Texas. Between then and now sit a long road to a doctorate in social work, years spent studying shame and connection, a personal reckoning her own data forced on her, a 2010 TEDxHouston talk that unexpectedly reached the world, and a shelf of books read everywhere. The line below draws the story so far, in order.

Who is Brené Brown?
She studied courage, then chose to be seen.
She spent years as a research professor at the University of Houston, measuring the things people rarely say out loud: shame, worthiness, and what she came to call wholehearted living. The work was going well, and then it turned on her. Around 2007 her own findings made plain that the people who lived wholeheartedly did one thing she did not: they let themselves be vulnerable. She has said the realisation landed her in more than a year of therapy, a period she calls, half joking, her breakdown, and that her therapist called a spiritual awakening.
In June 2010 she took that reckoning to a small stage at TEDxHouston and, instead of a safe academic talk, told the truth about her own unravelling. The talk, The Power of Vulnerability, was posted to the main TED site that December and went viral, becoming one of the most watched talks in the world. A run of books followed, The Gifts of Imperfection, Daring Greatly, Rising Strong, Dare to Lead and Atlas of the Heart, along with a Netflix special and two popular podcasts.
The idea she keeps returning to, in her own words at TED in 2012, is that vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, creativity and change. Her line is worth reading because the turn in it is inward: the scholar who studied human struggle was upended by her own research, and the thing she was most afraid of, being seen, is what she built the rest of her work on.
The moments
Brené Brown's timeline.
The 1960s
Born in San Antonio
Milestone. Casandra Brené Brown, the oldest of four, born in San Antonio, Texas.
The 2000s
Earned her doctorate
Milestone, and it changed her direction. A PhD in social work, after a bachelor and a master before it, the ground her later work stands on.
The breakdown, an awakening
Setback, and it changed everything. Her own findings showed she was not living what she studied. She has called the year that followed a breakdown, and her therapist a spiritual awakening.
Defend the work, or let it change her
Crossroads, decided.
The paths laid out: let the data change her, taken, or keep it academic. Three years later she carried the reckoning onto the TEDxHouston stage, and that talk reached the world.
The 2010s
The vulnerability talk
Milestone, and it changed everything. She told five hundred people the truth about her own unravelling instead of giving a safe academic talk.
The Gifts of Imperfection
Milestone. Her first widely read book, on letting go of who we think we should be.
The talk goes global
Milestone, and it changed her direction. Posted to the main TED site, it spread fast and became one of the most watched talks in the world.
Daring Greatly published
Milestone. A bestseller arguing that vulnerability is courage, not weakness.
Rising Strong published
Milestone. On what happens after a fall, and how people get back up.
Dare to Lead published
Milestone. Her research turned toward courage at work, and reached a new audience of leaders.
The Call to Courage
Milestone. Filmed before a live audience at UCLA, her first streaming special.
The 2020s
Unlocking Us begins
Milestone. A podcast of long, plain conversations that found a very large audience.
Atlas of the Heart
Milestone, and it changed her direction. A map of eighty seven emotions and experiences, and the language for naming them.
Atlas comes to screen
Milestone. The book became a series, carrying the same framework to a wider room.
The line reaches today still adding to itself, which is why it is drawn now rather than at the end. What it set moving is already everywhere: a language for shame and courage that millions now use, and every person who decided that being seen was worth the risk.
Your turn
Every story draws a unique line.
Hers turns on a private reckoning she chose to walk through. Yours has turning points too, and drawing them takes about three minutes.
