Who is Bismack Biyombo?
The boy from Lubumbashi who gave a season away.
He was born in Lubumbashi in 1992, and left home at sixteen to chase a game few around him could have imagined would carry him so far. He was spotted at a youth tournament in Yemen in 2008 and went on to learn the professional game in Spain, a long way from his family, before the power in his hands and his reach at the rim earned him a place in the 2011 NBA draft, taken seventh overall. His whole trade was defence: the block, the rebound, the wall a team could build in front of its basket.
Across more than a decade he played for Charlotte, Toronto, Orlando, Phoenix, Memphis, Oklahoma City and San Antonio, never the loudest name on a roster and always among the most valued in a locker room. His clearest night came in the 2016 playoffs with Toronto, when he set a franchise postseason record for rebounds in a single game and became, for a spring, the emblem of a team that would not be pushed off its own floor. He was still on an NBA roster in 2026, reaching the Finals with San Antonio in his thirties.
The turn that his line is really about came off the court. In 2021 he lost his father, Francois, his mentor and the co-founder of his foundation, and the following year he told his agent that his entire salary for the season would go to building a hospital in Lubumbashi, named for his father, for the many families who cannot take a loved one abroad for care. His line is worth reading because the largest thing on it is not a block or a title but a building, given away, that will outlast the career that paid for it.

Losing his father
