The character arc of Ben Francis

Born 4 June 1992 near Birmingham. Between then and now sit a pizza delivery job earning five pounds an hour, a company begun at nineteen in his parents' garage, a sewing machine and a screen printer bought with a thousand pounds of savings, the day early stock sold out at a fitness expo, gear sent to the first fitness creators, a valuation in excess of a billion pounds, and a return to lead the company he started. The line below draws the story so far, in order.

Who is Ben Francis?

The garage start that outgrew the giants.

He was born near Birmingham in 1992 and enrolled at Aston University in 2010, delivering pizza for five pounds an hour while he studied. He founded Gymshark in 2012, at nineteen, in his parents' garage, and in 2013 spent a thousand pounds of savings on a sewing machine and a screen printer so he could make the fitness apparel himself, cutting, printing and packing it between shifts and lectures. The company had no money and no staff, only a founder who did every job.

The turn came at a fitness expo in Birmingham in 2013, where the young brand's stock sold out and a piece of gear spread across social media, bringing in more in half an hour than he had made in months. He understood early that the people who moved fitness were not on billboards but online, and sent gear to the first fitness creators before anyone was calling them that. The brand grew with them, and Gymshark became one of the fastest-growing fitness names in the world.

His line does not run straight up. He stepped back from the chief executive role in his mid-twenties, moving into brand and product while an experienced leader ran the company, then returned as CEO in 2021 to lead it himself again. By then a stake had been sold at a valuation above a billion pounds. His line is worth reading because it starts in a garage with a screen printer and a pizza job, and every rung after it was built by hand.
