She grew up in Dallas, Texas, raised by her mother, and spent the first part of her working life on the road, managing tours for musicians. It was practical, unglamorous work that taught her how to run an operation with little money and less margin for error, and it carried her far from the world of venture capital she would later enter, where almost nobody looked or sounded like her.
Her turn toward investing came at her lowest point. For a stretch she had no home of her own, slept on the floor at a San Francisco airport, and relied on food assistance, and it was there, with no money and no invitation, that she taught herself venture capital by reading everything she could find and writing to people who did it for a living. In 2015 she founded Backstage Capital on that self-taught knowledge, with a plain thesis: back founders the industry tends to overlook, women, people of colour and LGBT founders, because talent is spread evenly and capital is not. The fund went on to invest in more than 200 companies.
Her line does not run straight up. In 2022 the fund paused new investments and reduced its team, a hard public season for something she had built from nothing. Rather than let that be the ending, she widened what she did: she wrote It's About Damn Time in 2020 and Your First Million in 2024, built a podcast, and in December 2024 stepped into a chairperson and advisory role as the firm sought a larger fund and new partners. Her arc is worth reading because the person with the least to start from built a seat at a table that had never set her a place.
