The character arc of Andrew Huberman

A life drawn by Character Arc from the public record

Born on 26 September 1975 at Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto, the son of the Argentine physicist Bernardo Huberman and a children's book author. Between then and now sit a childhood of soccer and swimming, his parents' divorce when he was twelve, a withdrawal from academics and an interest in skateboarding, a plan to become a firefighter, a community college that took him back, a degree in psychology in 1998, a master's in 2000, a doctorate in neuroscience in 2004, postdoctoral work at Stanford, faculty posts in San Diego and then Stanford, and a podcast from 2021. The line below draws the story so far, in order.

Who is Andrew Huberman?

He stopped caring about school at twelve. Community college got him back.

He was born at Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto, the son of an Argentine physicist who is also a professor at Stanford and a mother who writes children's books. As a child he played soccer and swam. Then his parents divorced when he was twelve, and he withdrew from academics, took up skateboarding, and considered becoming a firefighter. That is a completely ordinary teenage response to a family coming apart, and it is the part of his story most worth keeping.

What got him back was not a prestigious school. After developing an interest in therapy and biopsychology he attended Foothill College, a community college, and from there went to the University of California, Santa Barbara, graduating in psychology in 1998. A master's in psychology at Berkeley followed in 2000, and a doctorate in neuroscience at UC Davis in 2004. While at Berkeley he approached a distinguished scientist to be his doctoral advisor and was turned down, which is the sort of thing that stops most people.

He did postdoctoral research at Stanford under Ben Barres, working on the visual system, and held faculty positions at UC San Diego and then Stanford. He is an associate professor of neurobiology and ophthalmology at the Stanford University School of Medicine, and his laboratory studies vision regeneration, the mitigation of stress, and interventions for anxiety that do not involve drugs. His citation record is substantial by any standard.

Since 2021 he has hosted a podcast about health and science which has reached an audience far outside his field, and which is why most people have heard of him. He has also drawn criticism from scientists for promoting dietary supplements and for making poorly evidenced health claims. That is in the record and it is stated here once. This page does not settle the argument. What it records is a man who stopped caring about school at twelve and found his way back through a community college to a laboratory at one of the best universities in the world.

The moments

Andrew Huberman's timeline.

The 1980s

~1982

A physicist and an author

Everyday. A physicist father, an author mother, and a sporty childhood.

Jun 1987

His parents divorce

Setback, and it changed everything. Twelve years old, and he stopped caring about school entirely.

The 1990s

1 Jun 1994

Firefighting, or try again

Crossroads, decided.

The paths laid out: go back to school, taken, or take the firefighting plan. Ten years later he had a doctorate in neuroscience, and he now holds a Stanford professorship.

Sep 1994

Community college

Milestone, and it changed everything. Not a famous university. A community college, which is where the road back started.

Jun 1998

A degree at Santa Barbara

Milestone, and it changed his direction. Out of community college and into the university system.

The 2000s

Jun 2000

His first choice says no

Setback, and it changed everything. He asked the scientist he wanted to work with, and she said no.

Jun 2004

A doctorate in neuroscience

Milestone, and it changed everything. Three universities, ten years, and a doctorate at twenty eight.

~2005

Postdoctoral work at Stanford

Milestone, and it changed his direction. Back at the hospital he was born in, now as a scientist.

The 2010s

~2011

A laboratory of his own

Milestone, and it changed everything. His own laboratory, working on sight, stress and anxiety.

~2016

The citations add up

Milestone, and it changed his direction. A serious research record, before anybody outside the field knew the name.

The 2020s

4 Jan 2021

The podcast

Milestone, and it changed everything. A working scientist, explaining the research to everybody, every week.

~2024

Scientists push back

Setback, and it changed his direction. Other scientists objected, publicly, and the record says so.

The laboratory still works on vision and on stress, and the podcast still goes out every week. What he set moving is millions of people who now know what their own nervous system is doing, reached by somebody whose own education went badly wrong at twelve and had to be started again from the bottom.

Your turn

Every line draws a unique story.

His went off the rails at twelve and came back in through a community college. Yours is already further along than you think, and drawing it takes about five minutes.
