Who is Andrea Bocelli?
The voice that came out of the dark.
He was born in 1958 in Lajatico, a hill town in Tuscany, into a farming family, and he came into the world with poor eyesight. Music was there from the start: he sang as a small boy and took to the piano, the flute and the saxophone. At twelve an accident during a game of football took the last of his sight, and from that day he lived in the dark. His family raised him on courage rather than pity, and he has said plainly that being blind is not what defines his life.
The line does not run straight to the stage. He read law at the University of Pisa and qualified, and to pay for the singing lessons he wanted he played piano and sang in bars at night, learning his craft the long way. His break came through a demo: a recording of his voice reached the rock star Zucchero, and the doors that had stayed shut began to open. In 1994 he won the newcomers section of the Sanremo Festival, and Italy heard him for the first time.
What carried him to the world was a duet. Time to Say Goodbye, sung with Sarah Brightman in 1996, became one of the best-selling singles ever recorded, and the album Romanza that followed reached tens of millions. He has sung opera and popular song both, worked with Celine Dion and many others, and founded a charity in his own name. In 2020 he stood alone in an empty Duomo in Milan and sang Music for Hope, heard by millions at once.
