The character arc of Andre Geim

Born 21 October 1958 in Sochi, then in the Soviet Union. Between then and now sit a name turned away twice from a Moscow institute, years he likened to swimming through treacle, an escape to the West, a live frog floating in a magnet, an Ig Nobel Prize, a single layer of carbon lifted from graphite with ordinary tape, and the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics. Who is Andre Geim?

Turned away twice, he redrew what matter can be.

The story is that he was rejected. What actually happened is that he sat the entrance exams for a Moscow institute twice and was turned away both times, a failure he has put down to discrimination over his German ancestry. He went instead to the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, earned a doctorate at Chernogolovka, and then spent years in Soviet institutes he later compared to swimming through treacle. In 1990 he left, and drifted through short posts in Nottingham, Bath and Copenhagen before settling in the Netherlands.

What set him apart was a habit he kept for its own sake: Friday night experiments, playful questions with no promised payoff. One of them floated a live frog in a powerful magnet, which won him and Michael Berry the 2000 Ig Nobel Prize, the award for work that makes you laugh and then makes you think. Another, years later at Manchester, was pulling flakes off a lump of graphite with sticky tape to see how thin they could go. The answer was one atom thick. That flake was graphene, published in Science in 2004.

In 2010 he and his former student Konstantin Novoselov shared the Nobel Prize in Physics for it, and Geim became the only person ever to hold both a Nobel and an Ig Nobel. His line is worth reading because the same curiosity that floated a frog, and that a serious scientist might have been told to put away, is the one that found a new material. He was knighted in 2012 and is still asking questions.

He levitated a frog

Milestone. At the Nijmegen high field magnet lab a live frog floated in the field, a Friday night experiment that harmed nothing.

The 2000s

The Ig Nobel Prize

Milestone. The floating frog won the Ig Nobel in Physics, shared with Michael Berry, for work that makes you laugh then think.

Milestone. He moved to the University of Manchester, where the tape and the graphite were waiting.

Crossroads, decided.

Milestone, and it changed everything. With Konstantin Novoselov he peeled graphite with ordinary tape down to a single atom thick, and named it graphene.

The 2010s

The Nobel Prize in Physics

Milestone, and it changed everything. Shared with Novoselov for graphene. He became the only person ever to hold both a Nobel and an Ig Nobel.

Knighted, and British

Milestone. Knighted for services to science, and a British citizen from this year, alongside his Dutch and Russian roots.

The 2020s

Mar 2026

A chair in Hong Kong

Milestone. A part-time sabbatical with the University of Hong Kong, while he stays Regius Professor of Physics at Manchester.

The line reaches today still curious, which is why it is drawn now rather than at the end. What it has set moving is already everywhere: a material a single atom thick that runs through labs the world over, and the quiet permission it gives every person to keep asking the question nobody funded.
