The character arc of Aliko Dangote
A life drawn by Character Arc from the public record
Born 10 April 1957 in Kano, Nigeria, into a trading family, and educated in business at Al-Azhar University in Cairo. Between then and now sit a three thousand dollar loan from an uncle in 1977, a commodity trading company, a decision to manufacture in Nigeria rather than import into it, a refinery announced in 2013 that took a decade to commission, and a share sale in 2026 reported as the largest Africa has attempted. The line below draws the story so far, in order.

Who is Aliko Dangote?
The country imported everything, so he built the factories.
He was born in Kano in 1957 into a family that traded. His maternal great grandfather, Alhassan Dantata, was among the most significant traders in West Africa, his mother was a businesswoman, and his father ran a transport company. He has said he sold boiled sugar sweets to his classmates at the age of eight, which is the sort of detail that only becomes meaningful later. He studied business at Al-Azhar University in Cairo.
In 1977, at twenty, he borrowed three thousand dollars from an uncle and founded the Dangote Group to trade commodities. By 1981 he had extended into textiles, oil and gas and property. That is a good business, and it is also the business almost everybody in Nigerian commerce was in: buying things made elsewhere and selling them at home. The decision that separates his line from theirs came later, when he turned the group from importing goods into manufacturing them inside Nigeria, in cement, sugar and flour, which needs enormous capital, years of patience and a functioning grid.
The refinery is the largest version of that argument. Announced in 2013 to end the absurdity of an oil producing country importing its own petrol, it ran years beyond its original timetable and cost far more than first estimated before it was commissioned in 2023. It is the largest refinery in Africa. In October 2025 he announced an expansion towards 1.4 million barrels a day, and in September 2026 the refinery opened a share sale reported as the biggest ever attempted on the continent. His line is worth reading because the hard part was choosing to make things in a country where importing them was easier.
The moments
Aliko Dangote's timeline.
The 1960s
Selling sweets at eight
Everyday, and it changed everything. Eight years old, buying sweets and selling them on at school, in a family that traded for a living.
The 1970s
A loan, and a company
Milestone, and it changed everything. Three thousand dollars, borrowed from family, at twenty years old.
The 1980s
Into textiles and oil
Milestone, and it changed his direction. Four years in, and already across several industries, all of them still trading rather than making.
The 1990s
Keep importing, or start making
Crossroads, decided.
The paths laid out: manufacture inside Nigeria, taken, or stay a trading house. The group became the largest manufacturer in Africa, and the same argument produced the refinery commissioned in 2023.
From trading to making
Milestone, and it changed everything. Importing was faster, easier and proven. He chose to build factories in a country where that is very hard.
The 2010s
He announced a refinery
Milestone, and it changed everything. An oil producing country that imported its own petrol. He said he would fix it, and named a date.
Years late, and far over
Setback, and it changed everything. The thing took a decade rather than three years, and cost a multiple of what was budgeted.
The 2020s
The refinery is commissioned
Milestone, and it changed everything. Ten years from announcement, the largest refinery on the continent, built by a private company.
Into tourism, in Kenya
Milestone. A new sector and a new country, at sixty eight.
Doubling the refinery
Milestone, and it changed everything. Not finished with it. An expansion that would make it the largest refinery anywhere.
Africa's largest share sale
Milestone, and it changed everything. The refinery going to the public market, in the biggest offering the continent has seen.
The line reaches today still adding to itself, which is why it is drawn now rather than at the end. What it has set moving is physical and visible: cement plants, sugar refineries and a refinery on the coast, in a country that spent decades buying all three from somewhere else.
Your turn
Every line draws a unique story.
His took the slow route on purpose when the fast one was right there. Yours is already further along than you think, and drawing it takes about five minutes.
